With the recommendations for everyone to self-isolate during this Covid 19 crisis, this opens up the opportunity for us to spend more time in the kitchen! Whether cooking is a source of relaxation and comfort for you or a means of challenging yourself to enhance your culinary skills, now can be the perfect time to try new recipes. It is important to make sure that we are still nourishing our bodies with healthy and nutritious foods. With minimizing the trips to the grocery store and relying more on using non-perishable foods – this is the time to experiment with dried or canned lentils, beans and peas. This could also be the time to truly figure out how to get the most out of your Instant Pot!

While it is tempting in this time to move towards convenience foods and junk food, you can set yourself and your food environment up for success with a few easy tips.

1) We are going to eat what we bring into the house – shop wisely and swap less healthy foods for healthier options! ( ie. white bread for a whole wheat option )

2) We will eat what is readily available – cut up some carrot sticks or leave a bowl of fruit on the counter

3) Enjoy meals with others- whether living with roommates, family or a significant other, cooking together is a great way to socialize during self-isolation

4) Lastly, be understanding with yourself if you overeat or snack more than you normally do - these are unusual and stressful times and it is OK to take comfort in comforting foods :)
